Ottawa, Ontario – August 4, 2022 – Ahead of the federal government’s highly anticipated unveiling of its Indo-Pacific strategy, a new report highlights the paramount significance for Canada in strengthening economic relations with India.
The report, jointly released today by the Business Council of Canada and the Canada-India Trade and Investment Council, emphasizes India’s role as a pivotal gateway to the future of global trade. It calls for the realization of a comprehensive economic partnership agreement, a critical step for Canada to unlock boundless opportunities in the world’s fastest-growing major economy.
According to analysis conducted by Ciuriak Consulting, commissioned by both organizations, an ambitious trade deal could potentially elevate two-way trade by an impressive C$8.8 billion annually. By 2035, the potential economic boost for Canada would surpass that achieved through the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, which has successfully fostered trade ties with ten other nations.
Business Council of Canada President and CEO, Goldy Hyder, asserts, “Simply put, a successful Indo-Pacific strategy necessitates forging a path through India. While past trade negotiations have presented challenges, the Indian government has indicated newfound openness to trade. Canada must swiftly endeavor to become one of the first advanced economies to secure a comprehensive trade and investment agreement with India.”
The report also examines Canada’s relative underperformance in the Indian market over the past two decades, wherein it has lost market share to competitors. It concludes with recommendations to advance the bilateral relationship, alongside compelling case studies spotlighting four out of the 600 Canadian businesses and organizations benefiting from operations in India.
Canada-India Trade and Investment Council President and CEO, Victor Thomas, reinforces, “India is undergoing a remarkable economic surge, and Canadian companies should possess an actionable strategy to capitalize on this unique window of opportunity. Those already established in India are reaping the rewards of the nation’s transformation. As Canada charts its economic course, fostering robust trade and investment ties with the world’s next economic powerhouse must stand at the core of its priorities. Read Why India? to comprehend the vast potential that awaits.”
